Hour plans that ignore school gates and train connections look tidy on paper and collapse on Tuesday. Care windows are not lifestyle preferences; they are constraints as real as shift coverage.

Draw the non-negotiable blocks first

Mark pickup times, therapy appointments, and shared-care handoffs before you assign work hours. Then place work into the remaining islands. If islands are fragmented, fewer longer days may beat five thin scraps — unless your role depends on daily standups.

Commute as paid attention cost

A 70-minute each-way commute on a 20-hour contract consumes a shocking share of weekly energy. Hybrid patterns or compressed days sometimes solve more than another negotiation about percentage points. Document the commute math so managers see the tradeoff without moral framing.

Language that holds dignity

Replace apologies with operational statements: “I am available Tuesday–Thursday 9:00–15:00 including onsite Wednesdays.” Clarity reads as professionalism; over-explaining reads as uncertainty.
